Regenerative Agriculture 101

Regenerative agriculture is a system of farming principles and practices that seeks to rehabilitate and enhance the entire ecosystem of the farm by placing a heavy emphasis on soil health. It is a method of farming that improves the resources it uses, rather than destroying or depleting them.

Unlike conventional agriculture, which often degrades soil over time through intensive tillage, synthetic inputs, and monoculture cropping, regenerative agriculture works with natural systems to build soil organic matter, increase biodiversity, improve water cycles, and sequester carbon.

The core principles of regenerative agriculture include:

1. Minimize Soil Disturbance: Reduce or eliminate tillage to protect soil structure, fungal networks, and biological communities. No-till and minimal-till methods allow the soil ecosystem to thrive.

2. Keep the Soil Covered: Use cover crops, mulch, and crop residues to protect the soil surface from erosion, temperature extremes, and moisture loss. A covered soil is a healthy soil.

3. Maintain Living Roots Year-Round: Keep living plants growing in the soil as much of the year as possible. Living roots feed soil biology, maintain soil structure, and prevent nutrient leaching.

4. Maximize Crop Diversity: Move away from monocultures toward diverse rotations, polycultures, and intercropping. Diversity above ground feeds diversity below ground.

5. Integrate Livestock: Managed grazing can stimulate plant growth, cycle nutrients, and build soil organic matter when done properly using adaptive multi-paddock grazing methods.

Getting started with regenerative agriculture does not require a complete overhaul of your farming system overnight. Begin with one or two principles and expand from there. Many farmers start with cover cropping or reducing tillage and gradually adopt more regenerative practices over several seasons.

The transition period can be challenging, as soil biology needs time to recover and new systems need fine-tuning. However, farmers who persist through the transition often report reduced input costs, improved water infiltration, greater resilience to weather extremes, and comparable or improved yields within 3-5 years.
